Second gold for Australia at world junior athletics

Multi-talented Delta Amidzovski has won Australia's second gold medal at the world junior athletics championships in Lima, soaring to victory in the women's long jump.

Amidzovski first created headlines when she bettered the great Sally Pearson's national under-18 100m hurdles record last year.

She also has high hopes in that event at the world juniors, but it was in the long jump where the 18-year-old won her first global title.

Amidzovski set two personal bests of 6.49m and 6.58m to finish atop the podium ahead of American Sophia Beckmon (6.54m) and Julia Adamczyk from Poland (6.34m).

The 100m hurdles heats and semi-finals are on Thursday (Friday AEST).

"I have always grown up doing both the hurdles and long jump, so I have been able to switch on and off," Amidzovski said.

"Long jump has always been my 'fun' event, I don't have as much pressure in it and that helped me going out there today."

Fellow Australian Marley Raikiwasa claimed bronze in the women's discus with a best throw of 56.25m.

Bingyuang Han (57.57m) and Jingru Huang (56.47m) won gold and silver for China.

Mia Scerri (5550 points) was fourth in the heptathlon, 51 points shy of the bronze-medal position.

Aleksandra Stoilova (11.64) finished last in the women's 100m final, won by Jamaican Alana Reid in 11.17.

Teenage sensation Cameron Myers and countrywoman Cleo Richardson advanced to their respective 1500m finals in the Peruvian capital.

Australia won gold in the mixed 4x400m relay on day one of the championships, which run until Saturday.
