Second fire breaks out in Dublin park amid sizzling temperatures

Firefighters extinguished flames at Tolka Valley Park in Glasnevin this morning as the country continues to battle the current heatwave.

Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed that the grass at Tolka Valley Park went on fire and shared photos of the incident to their Twitter account. A blaze was also reported to have been put out in Tolka Valley Park over the weekend.

There were no known injuries related to either incident. The fire service also sent out a warning about the risks of leaving flammable substances on grass during particularly hot weather.

“Plants in planter boxes can dry out in this weather and ignite easily from the likes of discarded cigarettes,” Dublin Fire Brigade wrote on Twitter following an apartment blaze in Sandyford earlier this week.

Grass or wildfires are particularly dangerous as they can spread rapidly in outdoor areas, says Dublin Fire Brigade. Ireland is currently under an orange fire warning which is expected to remain in place until Wednesday.

Fire services have urged the public to avoid outdoor fire and adhere to rules surrounding land burning. Wicklow Fire Service also reported attending a blaze early this morning in Enniskerry.

The soaring temperatures reached 33℃ in Phoenix Park yesterday, the hottest day recorded in Ireland since 1887. Temperatures of over 40C have hit parts of France and Spain as Western Europe struggles with the scorching weather.

Met Eireann have suggested that Monday’s temperature could be the hottest ever recorded in Dublin as well as the warmest weather reported in the 21st century.

The heatwave is expected to decline in the coming days with a considerable drop in temperature reported this Thursday. Showers are also anticipated to occur in parts of the country tonight.
