Second City comic Michael Lehrer dies at 44 after brave six year battle with ALS

Comedian Michael Lehrer has died at the age of 44 following a six-year battle with ALS, his heartbroken girlfriend has confirmed.

The former Second City star chose to end his life with the help of a doctor on January 17, girlfriend Colette Montague told the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Michael died with dignity on his own terms," she told the publication.

"He was not suicidal at all. … Medical aid in dying was the hardest decision he ever made," Colette added.

Lehrer was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 2017 – a rare neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the body.

The fatal disease affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. There is currently no cure.

Following his diagnosis in 2017, Michael continued with his career and performed in a wheelchair in various clubs.

He spoke openly about his health battle both in his comedy sets and on the podcast Kill Tony, which he frequently appeared on alongside Joe Rogan and Ron White.

Joe paid tribute to Michael on Instagram, writing: "The courage this man had to do stand-up while battling a debilitating disease was insanely impressive and though he struggled to get words out the man would KILL onstage.

"He was a real legend, and I’m going to miss him very much."

His Second City co-star Chris Witaske has also paid tribute to his dear friend.

"Michael was truly unique, full of mischief and so f***in funny," he said. "He was always up for anything and loved nothing more than making people laugh."

He finished by writing: "It’s truly safe to say that there will never be another Michael Lehrer. Rest in Peace, brother."

Lehrer was selected as a New Face of Comedy for the 2014 Just for Laughs Festival.

He helped create four original sketch revues for The Second City, including the Jeff Award winner for Best Revue, Sky’s The Limit

A statement posted on Michael's Instagram page read: "The final act - watch for the sequel. Godspeed you wild and crazy man. We love you always, and are grateful for all you've given to the world."

He is survived by his son Colin and girlfriend Colette.

Colette has now set up a GoFundMe page to help his son. A statement on the page reads: "He wanted his son, Colin to be ok financially when he left this world.

"Please help honor Michael and show him how much we loved him by making sure his son can be secure for a while."
