Police searching for a missing British hiker who was swept away in floods with his girlfriend in Majorca have found a second body.
The body of Alexander Johnson’s girlfriend Sarah Jane Thompson, 26, was found on Wednesday morning in a flooded canyon the pair had been hiking when they were swept away by a torrent of water during a storm.
On Friday the search continued for the missing British man, 32, in the canyon known as the Torrent de Pareis.
And just after 11.15am local time a Civil Guard spokesman said they had found a second body.
The spokesman said: “The Civil Guard has found the body of a young man which pending official identification, corresponds to that of the man who disappeared on Tuesday while he was hiking in the Torrent de Pareis.”
The search for the pair began on Tuesday evening after other members of a group they were with that had to be rescued by the Civil Guard during flash floods in a storm said they had been swept away by a torrent of water.
Ms Thompson’s body was found near the spot where the operation, which has been expanded with the incorporation of a drone and police divers, was launched.
Juan Carlos Rodriguez, head of the Civil Guard’s specialist mountain rescue team which has been leading and coordinating the search, confirmed the grim discovery of items of clothing matching those of Alexander’s late on Thursday.
Relatives of the pair, who were holidaying in Majorca, are being assisted by authorities.
Police said after the two Brits went missing they were part of a larger group of walkers who were not adequately prepared for the sudden weather change and were among 10 people rescued on Tuesday during flash floods in a storm that affected the area.
The Torrent de Pareis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is regarded as one of the most scenic and well-known day walks in Majorca. It follows a deep canyon some four miles long starting from the Lluc area at the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana all the way to the sea where it opens onto a beach in the bay of Sa Calobra.
Visitors are warned the canyon can be flooded at times and urged to take care.
