Seaside pub inside three fishermen's cottages named as one of the best in UK

A pub created inside three old fishermen's cottages has been nominated for a top national award. The Windmill in Southport has been named Merseyside Pub and Bar of the Year in the National Pub and Bar Awards.

The pub industry awards are considered among the most prestigious with only 94 venues across the country making the list. The Windmill, described as a 'typical English pub', first opened in Southport in 1833.

The building originally was three fisherman's cottages but later expanded under various brewers. In November 2018, Neil Walsh and his partner Tom became custodians of The Windmill.

The pub's bosses said they are delighted with the award and nomination. Writing on Facebook, they said: "Well isn’t this a surprise! We have been named Merseyside Pub and Bar of The Year in the National Pub and Bar Awards.

"We're now off to London in June to receive our award and compete against all the other county winners for the main title. The National Pub and Bar Awards are the most prestigious awards for the pub and bar industry so it’s a great honour to receive this award. "As [always] thank you to our customers and hard-working staff that make it all possible."

The grand final, which takes place in London on June 28, will see the county winners discover which pubs will take home a regional title, as well as which site is to be named the UK’s best, leaving with the overall national pub.

At the final, other awards will be handed out, including the pub brand of the year, bar brand of the year pub chef of the year and sustainable pub and bar of the year.
