Police and fire crews are searching for a 17-year-old boy after he was seen entering a lake in a northeast London shortly after midnight on Monday.

The teenager was last seen entering the water at Fairlop Waters Country Park on Forest Road, Hainault.

Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade were called to help Met Police, along with the London Ambulance Service at 12.30am.

“It was reported that a 17-year-old boy had entered the water and was unaccounted for,” a Met Police spokesman said.

London Fire Brigade said no-one was found and the search finished on advice of the police marine unit.

The search resumed on Monday morning with a specialist team from the Met’s marine unit and the National Police Air Service.

The boy’s family have been informed, police said.

Fairlop Waters Country Park is closed while the operation is underway. Redbridge Council advised residents to check its websites for further updates.

“Following what appears to be an incidence of misadventure on the lake at Fairlop Waters in the early hours, the park will be closed until further notice,” said Redbridge Council deputy leader Kam Rai.

Fairlop Waters is a lake used for water sports and outdoor activities such as kayaking and sailing. There is also an inflatable play area on the lake.
