A 75-year-old man has been found dead after going missing in the Murrumbidgee River at Kambah Pool in Canberra's south.
ACT Policing were called to the scene about 12.30pm on Saturday following reports the man had disappeared while in the water at the popular swimming spot.
ACT Policing, ACT Ambulance Service, ACT State Emergency Service and Australian Federal Police teams all attended the scene.
Police divers and a helicopter were also deployed to search for the man.
The man's death was confirmed by police at 4:00pm after his body was discovered about 3:00pm.
He had been visiting the area with family at the time, police said.
Kayaker tried to help man before death
ACT Policing Acting Sergeant Angus Fergusson said investigations were still underway and some details of what caused the man to go missing in the water were not yet known.
He said a kayaker had reportedly tried to assist the man as he struggled in the water, but was unable to rescue him and he disappeared.
Acting Sergeant Fergusson said the incident was a reminder to take care while on or near waterways.
"Whilst the weather in Canberra at the moment has improved dramatically, Canberra waterways are quite cold and we would like to take this opportunity to remind Canberrans who are making use of the natural waterways… to take extreme care when they're swimming," he said.
"Certainly after heavy rain they should certainly consider whether or not it's safe to enter the water and if they're unsure, they shouldn't enter."
Acting Sergeant Fergusson said the kayaker who had tried to help the man was assisting police with their investigation.
The pool has been closed to the public due to increased bacteria levels in the Murrumbidgee River, but was open for boating and other activities.
