A teenage boy has died following an early morning single-vehicle crash on the South Coast, near Ulladulla.

Police arrived at the intersection of Woodstock Road and Kyeema Drive at Woodstock about 6.45am on Sunday following reports of a crash, and found a van had struck a concrete pole.

Paramedics treated the teen driver at the scene, however he was unable to be revived.

Early inquiries revealed the van was reportedly stolen from Sussex Inlet, with a group of teenage boys driving off in it shortly after midnight on Sunday.

A passenger was also treated before being airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick in a critical condition.

"Services there were met with a pretty horrible scene, a crash involving, what we worked out was a stolen van," Acting Superintendent David Cockram told ABC.

"Inside that car was a young male, the driver, [who] was deceased as a result of that crash and another young man in the passenger seat was removed through the work of rescue agencies after some period of time."

'Difficult scenes'

Acting Superintendent Cockram said it was "clearly a really significant and high-impact collision".

"It suggests the car was travelling at significant speed prior to colliding with that power pole," he said.

He told the ABC officers were still working to determine the victim's identity.

"We have police doing the terrible job of having to doorknock families in the local area at the moment, trying to identify young person and more than likely having to deliver some really tragic news to the family of one young fellow," he said.

"It's just really terrible and difficult scenes to have dealt with today."

Appeal for help

Police are appealing for the public's help after being told two passengers fled the scene before their arrival, and are using PolAir and the dog squad to search the area.

A crime scene was established and an investigation has begun, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is being urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
