Search begins to find Cumnock Citizen of the Year 2022

The race is on to find Cumnock’s Citizen of the Year 2022.

Organisers are seeking nominations from the public as the countdown begins in the race to find the winner.

Last year’s recipient of the Cumnock Citizen of the Year award was Tony Esquierdo, 69, who scooped the title for his sterling work throughout his village.

Tony, who was born and raised in Logan, was nominated due to his tireless efforts in trying to make the community a better place.

Among his many roles Tony was chairman of the Cronberry, Logan and Lugar Community Council since 2018, he’d also served as a member of the nine community councils’ group, which includes Cumnock, Netherthird, Auchinleck, New Cumnock, Dalmellington, Netherthird, Cronberry, Lugar and Logan, Patna, Drongan, Rankinston and Stair and Ochiltree and Skares.

His busy schedule — which sometimes saw him working late into the evening — included liaising with volunteers to carry out various jobs including grass cutting, litter picking, keeping pathways clean, and planting flowers, and advising community groups on grants they could be eligible for.

Now the Keir McTurk Committee, organisers of the competition, seek fresh nominations in an effort to find that local hero who deserves recognition.

Colin Chisholm, chairman of the Keir McTurk Memorial Committee, said: “The Keir McTurk Memorial Committee is seeking your help in their search for Cumnock’s Citizen of the Year for 2022.

“Nominations for this prestigious award can be made either by individuals or organisations.

“We are looking for someone who has, through his or her efforts, brought credit, rendered a service or contributed to the community in an exceptional manner deserving recognition.

“The person making the nomination must be resident in Cumnock, Netherthird, Craigens, Lugar or Logan.”

Nomination forms are available from local churches, Words of Wisdom, Visions, Cumnock Post Office, Cumnock Health Centre, the library, A&L Bryce Newsagents, Presents and Correct, Millie’s Tea Room and Netherthird Community Centre.

Completed nomination forms should be forwarded to William McVake, 21 Holmhead Road KA18 1QX, in a sealed envelope marked ‘ NOMINATION’ no later than 31 January 2023.
