Sean Wilson returns to Coronation Street as Martin Platt for an extraordinary reason

Sean Wilson is returning to Coronation Street as Martin Platt.

Coronation Street star Sean Wilson is set to return to the cobbles as Martin Platt for a very special reason.

Sean, who was last seen on our screens as Martin Platt six years ago has begun filming and will first appear on screen in October as part of Helen Worth’s exit storyline.

Martin’s son David is shocked to find his dad at the house and is immediately suspicious about his reason for coming back into their lives. But, how will the rest of the family feel when Martin reveals why he has turned up out of the blue?

Coronation Street icon Sean played Martin for 20 years from 1985 to 2005 before the character emigrated to New Zealand in 2018. But, he didn't leave the country without saying goodbye to his son, David, who was less than impressed with his dad's move.

Sean is clearly thrilled to be back on set and even shared a cheeky photo of his first day back, which you can see below...

Speaking of his return to the cobbles after all this time, Sean said: “It was great to be invited back to Coronation Street again and to contribute to Helen’s exit story. We’ll have a few months to catch up with Martin and Gail again, following the ebbs and flows of the unfolding storyline.

“Playing Martin has been a joy since day one and in a way, I’ll be slipping back to where I left off, which no doubt will throw a spanner into the heart of the Platt family. It’s just like slipping on an old and comfortable jumper from the back of the wardrobe… I’m looking forward to reuniting with my TV family.”

But what has brought Martin back to the UK and what part will he play in Gail’s departure from the street? Only time will tell!

Coronation Street airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
