At least 15 people were killed and more than 30 were injured when a terrorist drove a truck into a crowd at a New Year’s Eve celebration on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Wednesday morning.
Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton, who coached the New Orleans Saints from 2006-2021, was asked about the tragedy after Wednesday’s practice.
“I only saw what you guys saw,” Payton said. “My heart is broken for the loss of a lot of innocent lives. I haven’t seen any of the news specifically. I just know how late it happened and it’s awful. I’ll catch up when I go upstairs as to what exactly happened.
“It’s just gut-wrenching news, especially this time of year. There’s no great time of the year, but when it happens when so many people are down there for the bowl game and down there for the New Years festivities. I hate it.”
The Sugar Bowl between the Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish was scheduled to be played at the Caesars Superdome on Wednesday, but the game was postponed after the terrorist assault. The game has now been rescheduled for Thursday.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix opened his Wednesday media availability by saying his thoughts and prayers were with those impacted by the attack.
“First off, [my] thoughts and prayers are with the state of Louisiana right now,” Nix said. “Obviously, a tragedy. My heart goes out to them.”
