The Denver Broncos traded a seventh-round draft pick to the New Orleans Saints during roster cuts last month to acquire kicker Wil Lutz.
Before that trade, Lutz went 3-of-3 on extra-point attempts and 4-of-4 on field goal attempts during preseason with the Saints.
Buy Broncos TicketsFollowing his perfect summer, Lutz missed his first extra-point attempt in his Denver debut on Sunday. He later missed a 55-yard field goal.
“I didn’t have a good angle to look at the missed extra point,” coach Sean Payton said after an eventual 17-16 loss. “I was surprised a little bit [by] his first kick. He’ll bounce back.
“He’s had a good two weeks with us, hasn’t had any issues. We attempted the longer field goal — a 55-yard field goal. That one looked pretty close. That too, I think was missed right, though, so we’ll work to get that cleaned up.”
Later in Sunday’s game, Lutz converted a PAT and a 24-yard field goal, but his two misses could have added four points in a game that was ultimately lost by one point. The Broncos will need the kicker to bounce back when they host the Washington Commanders in Week 2.
