After trading outside linebacker Randy Gregory to the 49ers, the Broncos also tried to trade pass rusher Frank Clark, but Denver ended up releasing him after failing to find a trade partner.
Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked about the team’s decision to part ways with Clark on Monday.
“I think it was kind of a win-win for both sides,” Payton said. “Frank was frustrated with the snaps, or lack thereof. We brought him in hoping that we could get more from him.
“In fairness to Frank, I don’t think he ever felt like he was getting enough in a row to play well, and yet, some of the other younger guys were earning those spots. It was difficult. It was a difficult decision, and we just felt it was in the best interest of the club.”
Clark (36 snaps) was buried in the rotation behind Gregory (154), Nik Bonitto (154) and Jonathon Cooper (310). That was partly due to missing time with a hip injury, but Clark was not a key part of the pass rush rotation even when healthy.
With Baron Browning returning soon, Clark’s snaps weren’t going to increase. He’ll now get an opportunity for a fresh start with a new team and Denver will lean on their younger, more productive pass rushers.
