Former UFC Bantamweight Champion Sean O’Malley has revealed that he is back in training following a successful surgery. ‘Suga’ lost his 135-pound title to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306, but is back in training now following his post-fight surgery.
Sean O’Malley Back In Training Following Successful Surgery
After losing his UFC Bantamweight Title back in September at UFC 306, Sean O’Malley has confirmed that he has had successful surgery and is now officially back in training.
‘Suga’ lost via unanimous decision to Merab Dvalishvili at The Sphere in Las Vegas back in September, undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip in the aftermath.
O’Malley revealed post-fight at UFC 306 that his injury was a pre-existing one that he had been dealing with prior to the Dvalishvili fight. O’Malley has since been calling for an immediate rematch for the UFC Bantamweight Title, with no official announcement from UFC President Dana White as of yet.
Ahead of a potential return to the UFC octagon in 2025, ‘Suga’ is now back in training and is able to hit the mitts again:
“Good news is, ‘Suga Sean’ is back to training. We got into some mitts, some light sparring – he’s back in action,” O’Malley’s head coach, Tim Welch said in a recent episode of The Timbo and Sugar Show on O’Malley’s YouTube channel.
Sean O’Malley Back In Action With Light Sparring, Should Be Fully Healed In A Month
Fans are excited at the news that Sean O’Malley is back in the gym following a successful surgery. With that in mind, speculation is already rife as to when ‘Suga’ will return to the UFC octagon.
It is likely O’Malley will get an immediate rematch with Merab Dvalishvili, with the opportunity to win back his UFC Bantamweight Title. There has been no official announcement just yet and probably won’t be for another couple months, but the good news is that the former champion is back in the gym.
“I can’t wrestle yet, I can move around and hit mitts a little bit, can f**king shadow box, box spar a little bit, cannot grapple at all, yet. Probably about three weeks out from being able to start drilling,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel.
Although an official return to the cage is still a few months away, the good news is that ‘Suga’ is back training. Time will tell when exactly he’s able to return to action, but hopefully for MMA fans it isn’t too far away.
