The Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl 56 on Sunday night and shortly after the confetti fell at SoFi rumors of Sean McVay retiring started to swirl around the NFL world, rumors that were mostly powered by the coach himself who said “we’ll see” when asked a few days ago if he’d be the team’s coach next season.
When I first heard about McVay possibly retiring from coaching I was confused. At 36 he’s the youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl, he’s already been to two Super Bowls, and again, he’s only 36 years old. Why would he step away from that life?
But then I thought about it a little more and remembered that working a lot of hours stinks and if you can get paid more money at a different job and work less hours then that would be great!
Now I’m all about McVay stepping away from coaching and I think he would be crazy to stick around for any more years with the Rams.
Why? Because he reportedly could be scooped up by one of the networks that broadcasts NFL games and could be paid even more than he gets for coaching (he reportedly makes $8.5 million with the Rams and has two years left on his deal).
What would you rather do? Work long hours every week breaking down film so you can try to maybe win another Super Bowl or cruise to a different city each weekend where all you have to do is sit besides another person for a few hours and tell them what’s either going to happen or what just happened?
It’s a no-brainer! Just look at what Tony Romo does. He makes a boatload of cash and all he has to do is yell at Jim Nantz every week.
Romo is living the dream! And so could McVay!
Another reason why McVay should step away is that the Rams are in some roster trouble after going all in this season. A number of big names will be free agents, Odell Beckham Jr. reportedly tore his ACL, and Aaron Donald could retire.
Things are not going to be easy for LA next year.
Donald and McVay started a “RUN IT BACK!” chant at yesterday’s championship parade and while that’s a fun thing to yell while crushing beers and celebrating a championship it’s a very difficult thing to pull off once you’ve sobered up and gotten back to work.
Just look at Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs – with all their talent they’ve only won that one Super Bowl a few years ago. Going back-to-back is far from easy. The last team to do that was the Patriots way back in 2003-2004, which was a long time ago!
If McVay does come back he’s going to work a ton of hours and is likely not going to experience what he experienced Sunday night for quite some time, if ever.
Plus, he is engaged and wants to start a family. He also said he wants to see that family, which is something that doesn’t happen when you’re the head coach of a NFL football team.
Take the money from a network, call some games, spend some time with your family and enjoy your life, Sean McVay.
All the work you’ve put into your career has led you to this reward. Go out and take it!
