Sean McVay shares his take on Cooper Kupp’s play the last 3 weeks

Cooper Kupp has been struggling to return to his 2021 form after suffering injuries that have caused him to miss time in each of the last three seasons. Not only that, since the rise of Puka Nacua, Kupp’s targets have drastically dropped.

Kupp’s play on Saturday caused great concern as it looked like he was struggling to create separation from defenders. He was also unable to haul in passes he once did with ease, dropping a key third-down pass in the win.

In the last three weeks, Kupp has just four receptions for 53 yards, and that includes a zero-catch game against the 49ers.

When Sean McVay was asked about his star receiver’s play as of late, he had this to say.

“I think he’s played well,” McVay said. “I think it really comes down to are we getting opportunities? The receiver position is unique because there are so many things that you’re relying on to be able to be a factor, protection… Does the coverage dictate me getting the football and am I getting the opportunity? With what he can control, I think he’s done a good job.”

Perhaps in McVay’s eyes, Saturday’s performance was a one-off. Kupp, the Super Bowl LVI MVP may be saving his best for last. A player built for the big time, Kupp’s 498-yard, six-touchdown 2021 postseason run remains a beacon of hope for Rams’ fans.
