Kyren Williams had a monster game once again on Sunday, rushing for 152 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. He also caught five passes, seeing yet another heavy workload in the Rams’ 28-20 win over Washington.
The only concerning part of his performance was the fact that he fumbled it twice, losing both of them. Those fumbles undoubtedly cost the Rams points, but they were able to overcome those uncharacteristic mistakes by their stud running back.
After the game, Sean McVay expressed plenty of confidence in Williams.
“Got a lot of confidence in him. Those are very correctable things,” McVay said. “You could see he was getting a little loose, even on the great run he had earlier in the game. It’s kind of getting away from his body. You credit them for being able to force those, but he’s a great player. We wouldn’t be in a lot of these situations – in a positive way, I mean – if it wasn’t for him. I loved the way that he finished the game out. It’s always about your response so he’ll learn from it. He’s the type of guy that has the right football character, the right mindset and mentality to be able to use these things as learning ops, push forward in a positive way. He still made big-time contributions in this game.”
After Williams watches the tape from this game, he’ll probably be inclined to hold the ball high and tight in his next outing against the Saints. They were both good plays by the Commanders to knock the ball out, but Williams has to be more secure when he’s carrying it in the open field.
Like McVay said, it’s very correctable, and Williams hasn’t had a fumbling issue at all this year, so it was likely just a blip for the Rams running back.
