Sean McVay confirms Rams are trying to move Cam Akers, get him a fresh start

Sean McVay confirmed the expected on Monday: The Los Angeles Rams are trying to move running back Cam Akers. He told reporters that the Rams will look to give him “a fresh new start” with another team, suggesting they will attempt to trade him.

Akers and McVay reportedly have football-related and philosophical differences, according to Ian Rapoport, which is why Akers was absent from practice on Thursday and Friday, and also inactive for Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

The Rams drafted Akers in the second round of the 2020 draft and he helped them win a Super Bowl last year after returning from a torn Achilles for the playoffs. He’s struggled since then, however, and has fallen out of favor in the backfield after being Darrell Henderson Jr.’s backup in Week 1.

McVay also didn’t rule out the possibility of Akers remaining with the Rams if they can’t strike a deal.

Akers still has value as a young running back, but he doesn’t look like the same player since tearing his Achilles – something that’s hardly surprising given the severity of the injury.

With Akers on his way out, Henderson and Malcolm Brown will handle the bulk of the carries moving forward.
