Sean Goss admits his scoring record is no laughing matter even though his last two goals have both arrived on April Fool’s weekend.
The Motherwell midfielder finally got off the mark for the season with a sensational free kick in last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Hibs. His previous goal before that April 1 strike arrived on the same weekend a year ago in a 4-2 victory against St Mirren.
Now Goss is desperate to prove he’s no joke in front of goal by producing a few more set piece tricks as Well look to claw their way further away from the danger zone. Against Livingston in Lanarkshire this afternoon would be as good a time as any with the on-fire Steelmen looking to cut the gap on seventh-placed Lions to three points.
Goss said: “Next season I want to try and get one before Christmas! I need to get a few more goals in my game.
“I knew it was a while since I last scored but I didn’t realise it was that long. April seems to be my time of year. Was that my best goal? There are not that many to choose from but that is right up there with the best I’ve scored.
“It was a nice feeling and an even better one as it helped us put our stamp the game. We built on it and dominated the game and deserved the win.
“Hopefully I can get a few more although there are a lot of good set-piece takers at the club.”
Former Rangers and St Johnstone playmaker Goss is out of contract at the end of the season.
And while he is happy to shelve talks over a new deal until safety is rubber-stamped the 27-year-old admits he wants to stick around for longer at Fir Park with Stuart Kettlewell having re-energised the place.
Goss has started all six of the games Kettlewell has been in charge, helping take 13 points from 18, and his man of the match display against Hibs last weekend proved his importance to the Steelmen.
He said: “It’s not something we have really spoken about due to the position the club has been in.
“The safety of the club and staying in the division has been more important.
“It is obviously something we will speak about down the line.
“My preference would be to stay as I enjoy the league and this is a good club.
“Under the new manager, results have been brilliant and there is a good atmosphere around the place.
“It was a frustrating start to the season and we thought we deserved a few more results.
“We made the top six last season and there is no reason why Motherwell can't aim to get there again next year. “
In the meantime Goss is preparing to go toe-to-toe with a familiar face in the Fir Park engine room this afternoon.
Former Rangers team mate Jason Holt is a key man for David Martindale’s side and Goss knows the Well midfield will have to run that bit harder if they’re to stop the Livi livewire making his mark.
Goss said: “I haven’t spoken to him for a while but it will be good to catch up.
“They’re a tough side and Holty is a terrific player.
“He used to do all my running when we were at Rangers together.
“He never stops and was one of the hardest trainers I’ve ever come across.
“Holty gets everywhere and, while they have a few players who could cause us problems, he is one we will need to keep an eye on.”
