Sean Connery named the most Googled Scottish celebrity in the world

Sean Connery, Karen Gillan and Andy Murray are the world’s most Googled Scots, it has been revealed.

In a list that also features the likes of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, Hollywood star Gerard Butler and singer Lewis Capaldi, the global top 10 is made up of Scotland's top stars.

Comparison site CasinoBee analysed Google search trends for famous Scots from the film, TV, music and sports industries.

They looked at the average number of monthly searches for celebrities born in Scotland, to find the most frequently searched Scottish personalities in the world.

The most searched Scottish celebrity in the world is former James Bond star Sean Connery, with 2.5 million searches every month.

Connery, who was born in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, was the first actor to portray 007 agent James Bond on the big screen, featuring in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983. He first starred as Bond in the 1962 film Dr No and in 2000, Connery was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace, for his achievements in film throughout his career.

Despite his unfortunate passing in October 2020 at the age of 90, he has left behind an iconic legacy in film and continues to be remembered fondly by the public.

Action hero Gerard Butler comes in second with just under 1.5 million monthly searches worldwide.

The 300 star placed just above TV personality and top chef Gordon Ramsay, who amassed the only slightly smaller figure of 1.4 million.

Film and television stars Karen Gillan and Ewan McGregor are fourth and fifth most searched worldwide, with 1.35 million and 1.14 million searches every month respectively.

The most searched Scottish celebrity in the UK however, is tennis superstar Andy Murray, who edged the former Bond star off the top spot, with 370,000 searches every month.

Murray, who was born in Glasgow, was ranked World No.1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals in 2016 and has won three Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Speaking about the results, a spokesperson from CasinoBee said: “Despite two years since his unfortunate passing, it appears Sean Connery’s achievements in film have left a profound and long-lasting impact on the general public.

"With one million searches more than the runner up, it is likely he will maintain the top spot for many years to come.

“Scotland has produced many highly acclaimed movie stars, with four of the top five most searched, gaining recognition in top grossing Hollywood films.

“It is not surprising to see that Andy Murray is the most searched in the UK, following his return to the Australian Open in January. Fans will be disappointed to see him knocked out of the competition, however Scotland can take pride in the fact that they have produced an outstanding player and public figure.”
