LONDON – Sean Brady is confident he will pose a different type of threat to Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night 255.
Brady (17-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) takes on former UFC welterweight champion Edwards (22-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) in Saturday’s main event at The O2 (ESPN+). After facing Kamaru Usman twice, Colby Covington and Belal Muhammad in his past four fights, Edwards will draw another grappler in Brady. But the Philadelphia native says he’s not the same stylistic matchup.
“A lot of those guys are strictly wrestlers,” Brady told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC Fight Night 255 media day. “Like Colby’s a wrestler, Kamaru’s a wrestler. If you look at their records, none of them really have submissions.
“I just think I’m like a much bigger submission threat than a lot of the guys he’s fought, and I think I’m the biggest submission threat in the division. So, I’m a different level of grappler.”
‘Someone who’s trying to kill him Saturday night’
Edwards said he was told his fight with Brady is a No. 1 contender bout, but Brady isn’t thinking about the long game or setting expectations about what a win would lead to.
“I’m not trying to get a title shot out of this,” Brady said. “I’m not trying to rush it. That’s what I did before in my career. I went into the Belal (Muhammad) fight pushing for it so hard and it turned out that wasn’t the night for me. So, I’m going to go out there, I’m going to do my job, get my hand raised by any means necessary, and then wherever I go from there, I go.”
Both fighters are eager to avenge their loss to UFC welterweight champion Muhammad, but Brady warns Edwards not to overlook him.
“I think that’s a bad look on Leon to be thinking about other people when all I’m thinking about is fighting him,” Brady said. “He’s thinking about No. 1 contenders, and getting back at Belal, and talking sh*t about Belal. But he’s got someone who’s trying to kill him Saturday night in front of him, and he has more things to be concerned about than being a No. 1 contender in the division.”
