Seahawks won’t see Chargers QB Justin Herbert in opening preseason game

The Seattle Seahawks will open their 2024 preseason against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, August 10th. If head coach Mike Macdonald and defensive coordinator Aden Durde were hoping to test their defense against the Chargers’ first-team offense, they received some disappointing news on Thursday.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is going to be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks, according to a bombshell report from Adam Schefter. Herbert has been diagnosed with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot. He’ll spend approximately 14 days in a walking boot, guaranteeing he’ll miss next Saturday’s exhibition game versus the Seahawks.

The Chargers’ No. 1 quarterback in the meantime will be 2019 fifth-round selection Easton Stick. Stick will likely receive the start versus the Seahawks. The former North Dakota standout started four contests for the Chargers last season, going 0-4 while Herbert was sidelined with a finger injury. He completed 63.1% of his passing attempts, throwing for three touchdowns and one interception.

The other quarterbacks on the Chargers roster include Max Duggan and Casey Bauman. Duggan is a sophomore seventh-rounder who was waived by the team last August and December, spending portions of the season on the practice squad. He signed a reserve/futures contract in January.

Bauman is a rookie undrafted free agent that played college football at Montana State and Augustana. It’s unclear whether or not the Chargers planned to play Herbert in this preseason game against the Seahawks, but Seattle will be disappointed that the option is now off the table altogether. The Seahawks will do their best to use the action versus the other three quarterbacks as preparation for the regular season.
