Seahawks, not Panthers, regarded as likelier destination for Baker Mayfield

The Carolina Panthers still aren’t tripping over themselves to get to Baker Mayfield—even with their “competition” emerging as the purported frontrunner for the quarterback’s services.

On Wednesday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported that the Seattle Seahawks have maintained a high level of interest in the former No. 1 overall pick—perhaps to the point where they’d consider extending him beyond the 2022 campaign. And now, one night later, Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson has added to that sentiment.

According to Wilson, the Seahawks are seen as a likelier landing spot for Mayfield than the Panthers. He also noted that there is mutual interest between Seattle and the displaced Cleveland Browns quarterback.

“There hasn’t been any recent significant movement toward the Browns being able to execute a trade for Mayfield and no trade is imminent, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly,” Wilson writes. “The Carolina Panthers, after holding trade discussions during the draft regarding Mayfield that didn’t come close to a deal, are not regarded as likely of a destination as another potential trading partner: the Seattle Seahawks.”

Those mid-draft discussions, obviously, didn’t end with Mayfield booking a flight to Charlotte. That ticket, instead, went to Ole Miss standout Matt Corral—who Carolina drafted later on that night with the 94th overall pick.

If nothing else, at least the Panthers have remained firm on their stance regarding Mayfield. Unless the Browns really, really sweeten the deal, then the team seems fine with not investing any further resources into yet another retread project.
