Seahawks linebacker group gets surprisingly high ranking from PFF

Rankings season continues here at Seahawks Wire and just about everywhere else during this quietest of times on the NFL calendar. Pro Football Focus is going through their annual rankings of each position group for all 32 teams. Today, Dalton Wasserman did their linebacker unit rankings and he apparently thinks pretty highly of Seattle’s group.

The Seahawks came in at No. 7 on his list, naturally boosted by the return of the game’s greatest off-ball linebacker, Bobby Wagner. The rest of the group is up for debate, though.

“Seattle’s questions lie with the rest of the group. Mainstay Jordyn Brooks is a tackling machine and run defender, but his struggles in coverage have kept his overall grades below 60.0 in each of his first three seasons. He’s durable and tough but may not be a long-term top-end player in the middle. Free agent acquisition Devin Bush faces similar questions as a former first-round pick who has never found his footing. If either were to have a breakout season, they could combine with Wagner to form an elite group. It just seems unlikely, given their track records.”

Unlikely is putting it kindly. While Bush will only be 25 when next season begins, he’s undersized and has consistently earned poor grades from PFF since he was drafted. The same is true for Brooks, who’s recovering from a late-season ACL tear.

We’d feel a lot better about this group if either Cody Barton or Tanner Muse had been re-signed for depth. Safe to say we are not as confident as PFF is on this one. Bobby is only one man afterall and the rest are pretty far from K.J. Wright and Bruce Irvin in their prime.
