Efforts to make the seafood sector cleaner and greener have been brought into focus with the hosting of a first ever decarbonisation workshop.
Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance held the inaugural event at The Fishmongers’ Company in London. Major UK retailers were joined by food service providers and seafood processors for the event.
Attendees heard from both Young's and New England about an initiative to identify and measure decarbonisation actions that all organisations can collaborate with.

Facilitated by carbon industry specialist, Dr Henrietta Boyd, a court member of The Fishmongers’ Company, Seafish’s low carbon product calculation tool - set to be launched by the industry authority later this year - was also previewed by Dr Stuart McLanaghan, head of responsible sourcing there.
Simon Smith, chair of Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance, said: “We're grateful to Fishmongers' Company for hosting this workshop. Our alliance and its members represent a significant part of the UK's fish and seafood processing sector, and are fully focused and aligned to improve and highlight low carbon initiatives within our supply chains. Our alliance has commitments with the government’s food strategy to lead on net zero carbon within a complex supply chain."
It comes after a funded initiative to electrify some of Grimsby’s mobile fishmonger fleet was launched in the town, with academic, government and business partners. It has been shortlisted in the Humber Renewables Awards, taking place this week.
Seafish chief executive, Marcus Coleman, said: “Seafish was delighted to be involved with the alliance in this vitally important workshop. We've been working on designing and implementing the Seafood Carbon Tool in collaboration with industry and their customers, including retailers and food service businesses. We're excited about launching the carbon tool later this year and joining the alliance in a further stakeholder workshop."
