SDLP launches red 'battle bus' for election - but does it look similar to another famous bus?

The SDLP has launched a "campaign battle bus" for the Stormont Assembly election.

The bus features images of SDLP leader Colum Eastwood, deputy leader Nichola Mallon and MP Claire Hanna as the party vows to "fight the cost of living crisis".

But covered almost completely in red paint, it may inadvertently appear similar to the infamous bus used by the UK's Vote Leave campaign for the 2016 EU referendum.

The bus, used by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to drum up support for Brexit, was widely derided for a divisive claim that the UK sent £350million a week to the European Union.

The SDLP, which campaigned to remain in the EU, had a blue "battle bus" in 2019 during Mr Eastwood's unsuccessful European Parliament election campaign.

Launching their latest bus for May's election, Mr Eastwood said his party "won't be cowed by faceless thugs" and remains focused on tackling cost of living pressures.

It follows an SDLP election candidate saying how she was attacked after chasing two youths spotted removing her election posters.

A party candidate in West Belfast also described how he and his team were approached by a group of men in the Shankill area and told they "weren't welcome".

Police have received more than 40 reports of election posters for various parties being stolen or damaged during the campaign.

Mr Eastwood said: "Those engaged in this pathetic attempt to silence our party or threaten our people need to understand that we will not be intimidated.

"We will not be distracted and we will not be deterred from our single priority in the three weeks ahead - putting ordinary, decent, hard working people first."

The Foyle MP added: "I am sick knocking on doors and seeing people come out in their winter coats because they've had to turn all the radiators off.

"I am angry that people who work every hour God sends are cutting back on the food shop because they can't afford their household bills.

"Someone we knew very well said it best - you can't eat a flag. For us this election is about making sure that no one comes home from work or school to sit in a cold house."
