Kyle Lafferty has paid a huge price on the back of the social media storm after he used a sectarian slur and he’ll have about three months to dwell on his behaviour.
The 10-game ban dished out by the SFA is one of the biggest in Scottish football history and although the Killie striker has said sorry, some fans want him to go further. Bill Lockerbie, Northampton , said: “ Lafferty is apologising to Kilmarnock supporters for his sectarian remarks after receiving a 10-match ban. Has he considered apologising to the wider public, particularly those of us who he specifically offended?
“What a coincidence that his next match will be against Celtic at Hampden, so may I suggest he grabs the microphone before kick off and does the honourable thing. I won't hold my breath.” Paul Conner , via email, said: “At long last Lafferty is banned for 10 matches. Obviously Kilmarnock FC is not , as claimed, ‘a family club’. A family club would have dumped Lafferty for good immediately he was charged with sectarian abuse.”
Tom Paterson, Falkirk, said: “As a Killie fan I applaud the SFA 10 match ban on Lafferty.
“But this is a problem that the Police and SFA turn a blind eye to when it comes to the Old Firm.
“Until the Police take strong action against the singers of the vile songs of hate from both sets of Old Firm fans, then the problem will never go away.”
Terence McGuigan, Stirling, said: “Why didn't Lafferty apologise to the person on the receiving end of it instead of just the club, his family and the Killie supporters? If he really is contrite he will come out and do the honourable thing and apologise to the person who should have been the first to receive an apology.”
Gordon McIlwraith, Kilmarnock , said: “Lafferty banned for 10 games. “Shocking. Kyle was punished by Killie, that should've been it.”
Meanwhile Lawrence Hodge emailed: “With Kyle Lafferty getting a 10 game ban, do you think the SFA will punish the Irish Ladies team in the same manner?”
Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “Lafferty has quite rightly been given a huge ban for his sectarian comment, I just wonder when the Irish ladies squad go to the World Cup how many players that sang a certain sectarian song will face a 10 match suspension from International football?”
Rangers fans hit the boos after the Dundee cup win and Graham McAdam, Carluke, said: “Having watched Rangers these past few weeks shocking would be an understatement. That standard of football was what we played when in the lower leagues. I’m sorry Gio van Bronckhorst, but I’m losing confidence in you.”
David Russell emailed: “What is Gio’s game plan and why do we find ourselves starting a game less than six months after a European final with only three of the players who got us there now starting for Rangers.
“Can he tell me which of the people who started the other night are better than the players they have replaced?”
Dr Robert S Pender, via email, said: “Rangers are playing under a dark cloud and the loss of all confidence stemming from captain.
“He seems to be operating on 50 percent energy from passing to crosses.
“Ridvan Yilmaz looks very good and along with Wright should have a run of games.”
Former Gers boss Steven Gerrard wasn’t getting much sympathy in Glasgow after getting punted by Aston Villa.
Andy Logan emailed: “I don’t understand Rangers fans who want Gerrard back at the club after the way he left, the word Judas was used a lot. His sacking at Villa shows he was just the name to attract players, Michael Beale was the real coach.”
Irwin Houston, Giffnock, said: “Gerrard was found out on his true coaching credentials after Michael Beal left the club. He couldn’t wait to leave Rangers, scurrying away to manage an inferior club to Glasgow Rangers.
“I have no sympathy for him as he did the dirt on Rangers.”
