Scrooge neighbours demand charity Christmas lights taken down as they ‘make lives hell’

A group of neighbours are yet to find their festive spirit after demanding charity Christmas lights be removed, complaining they are ‘making their lives hell’.

Residents of Saxifrage Way in Worthing have said that they have caused increased traffic, noise and litter in their road.

The large Christmas lights display has been erected every year since 2020 to raise money for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

People from far and wide flock to marvel at the festive lights with neighbours grumbling that they are causing extra traffic in the road.

One resident, who wishes to remain nameless, said: "There is rubbish everywhere and the noise is ridiculous. It has made our lives hell.

"My husband could not get out of our driveway and last year we had our fence broken due to the chaos."

She said they supported the charity but the display was "just bedlam for the residents".

Sue, who runs the display, disagrees as she claims there is CCTV footage which shows “there has been no traffic disruptions”.

“There has not been excessive litter at all and if anything there is less, as on turn-on night we swept leaves and debris including litter away," she added.

At the end of the evening when the lights are switched off, Sue said she goes to collect donations and picks up any litter she sees.

The lights display has introduced a sponsor this year - Jim Jam's Bakes and Barista - due to rising energy costs.

Sue said: "This year we have had to take on a sponsor because our energy bills have doubled.

"It is costing us at least £8 a day and we fund all the lights ourselves."

"As regards the traffic, we put regular updates on our Facebook to suggest alternative places for people to park so they can make a short walk to the display,” she added.
