Screams for help as woman hit by suspected drug driver

People were heard screaming for help after a woman was hit by a car being driven by a suspected drug driver.

The woman, in her 30s, was hit by a Ford Focus on Hale Road close to the junction with Liverpool John Lennon Airport in Speke on Monday, August 22. Police and paramedics were called to the area at around 11.45pm and the woman was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Police confirmed this morning that the woman remains in a critical condition in hospital.

People living in the Hale Road area reported seeing the woman trapped underneath the car before she was given CPR at the scene. Josephine Hesketh, 76, said she was watching TV in bed when she saw the blue lights outside the window last night.

Josephine said paramedics attended to the woman for around an hour at the scene before putting her into the back of an ambulance. She said: "There were so many ambulances and police. I said a little prayer."

Hale Road has become a popular place for drivers dropping people off and collecting them from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with residents reporting people parking illegally and leaving their cars there for weeks on end.

Pam, 61, added: "This road is a nightmare."

Another woman, who did not want to be named, told the ECHO: "We were in bed and the dogs were upstairs barking, I was trying to keep them quiet. The next thing we heard someone shouting 'help, help.'

"They were trapped under a car. All you could hear people shouting was 'help, help.' Loads of people tried to give her CPR while she was trapped. It's horrible and it's happening all too frequently now."

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 30-year-old man from Speke, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving. He has been taken to a police station and remains in custody.

Detective Sergeant Paul Evans, from Merseyside police's serious collision investigation unit, said: "We are supporting the woman’s family as our enquiries continue. We are keen to speak to anyone who saw this incident, may have been passing the location at this time and captured anything on dashcam or other devices. Your information could be vital in establishing what happened so let us know.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact SCIU on (0151) 777 5747, or email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk. Alternatively DM @MerPolCC quoting reference 22000621301."
