'Screaming' woman rescued after falling into river

Emergency services rescued a woman after she fell into a river in Bury and 'screamed for help'.

A huge emergency response was sparked after the incident was reported near the River Roch around 1am this morning (Thursday). Firefighters were scrambled, as well as a rescue boat, the Technical Response Unit and the air unit.

The woman had fallen into the river and had to rescued by crews. Firefighters used a rope climbing kit and ladders to get her out.

Paramedics were then able to treat the woman at the scene. It has not been confirmed whether she was taken to hospital.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "This morning around 1am firefighters from Bury and Whitefield fire stations, the boat from Heywood fire station, the Technical Rescue Unit from Ashton under Lyne and the GMFRS Air Unit attended an incident on Alfred Street in Bury where a woman had fallen into the River Roch and was screaming for help.

"Firefighters used rope climbing kit and ladders to rescue the woman and bring her to safety up where North West Ambulance Service were able to treat her."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 12:30am on Thursday 25 August 2022, Police were called to a report of a concern for the welfare of a female on Valley Mill Lane, Bury. Emergency services attended the scene to assist to help the female out of the water and was done so safely after she fell in by accident."
