A woman hiking in California was rescued after a mysterious "tattooed man" with a gun tied her to a tree and walked away.
The incident unfolded early on December 6, when the woman, in her 40s, went for a morning walk on a wooded trail in Pebble Beach, KSBW reported.
She reported noticing a man following her before he confronted her with a handgun, tied her to a tree, and walked away without physically harming or robbing her.
Hours later, passersby heard her cries for help, untied her, and alerted authorities.
"That's so sinister, really," Gwen Estep, a hiker, said. "It wasn't just that she was hurt. She was really violated in a strange way. I hope she's all right."
The suspect, described as a Hispanic man in his 30s with a neck tattoo starting with the letter "Z," remains at large.
An extensive investigation and search involving drones from CAL FIRE and the sheriff's office is underway.
The victim was taken to a hospital for evaluation and has not reported physical injuries.
