Screaming as windows smash and fire breaks out inside flat

Loud shouts were heard in the street before a fire broke out in a ground floor flat.

People in the area said they heard shouting in the street and then a loud bang as an object was thrown through a ground floor flat window. Emergency services were called to the block of flats on Lister Drive, Tuebrook at around 4.30pm today, Sunday, August 28.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were first on the scene and found a flat fire in the ground floor of the flats. Crews from three fire engines started battling the blaze with two firefighters in breathing apparatus using a hose reel jet to bring the fire under control.

Fire crews continued to dampen down and hotspot the flat while also checking neighbouring properties for signs of fire and smoke spread. A full evacuation of the remaining flats also took place.

An eyewitness of the incident said she heard "lots of shouting and then a massive bang". She told the ECHO : "I'm feeling quite shaken up. First I heard was a lot of shouting and then the bang.

"It gets quite rowdy around here so I didn't think anything of it at first. There was another incident in the flats last week. Next thing I knew there were loads of sirens and all the police and fire engines turned up.

"There's police tape all around the back now. Everyone is just waiting around to be allowed back into the flats."

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said everyone was accounted for. The spokesperson added: "One individual from a neighbouring flat was assessed for slight smoke inhalation by North West Ambulance Service paramedics at the scene."

The scene was handed over to Merseyside Police around 6pm with the fire service leaving shortly after. A force incident manager for Merseyside Police told the ECHO enquiries into the fire were ongoing.
