'Scrambler bike' doing 'wheelies' on Crosby beach sees huge emergency response

Emergency services descended on Crosby beach on Monday evening after a scrambler bike was seen reportedly causing chaos.

Several police officers as well as coastguard and rescue volunteers were spotted gathering on Crosby beach on Monday evening. Eyewitnesses said two police helicopters were also seen circling the area as a scrambler bike was seen on the beach shortly after 7pm.

Dozens of people were seen crowding around nearby to watch the scenes unfold on the beach, which appeared to be cleared of people, except for the red bike which was seen "doing laps" on the seafront. Pictures captured by the ECHO showed crowds gathering as the scrambler bike rider was "doing wheelies".

Merseyside Police confirmed they were called at around 1.50pm to a report of a group of men riding off road bikes on Mariners Road, Liverpool. Officers spotted the bikes on Queens Road and arrested two men in the area on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and assisting an offender.

A 4x4 BMW motor vehicle and an off-road scrambler bike were also seized by police. After a police pursuit a man rode onto the beach near Crosby Marine Lake and stopped the vehicle.

Another picture taken by the ECHO appeared to show search and rescue volunteers waiting nearby, some of whom approached the rider, who donned a bright green helmet. Many people took to social media to express their confusion as to why emergency services were out in force on Monday, April 18.

One person wrote the scrambler bike had been "on the beach for three hours" as another noted the police helicopter was circling the vicinity. Unconfirmed reports suggested the bike was causing chaos as it "was dodging police".

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) confirmed to the ECHO that RNLI volunteers were "assisting with other search and rescue agencies".

Merseyside Police confirmed a containment is in place around the beach as a precaution and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter is at the scene while officers engage with the man. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing.

A spokesman added: "We would like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience as we deal with this incident."
