Scouser named as 'one of the greatest football players in the world' by Wrexham owner

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has heaped praise on Scouse forward Paul Mullin - labelling the former Everton and Liverpool trainee as "one of the greatest football players in the world".

Mullin fired two goals as the Red Dragons ended their 15-year wait for a return to the Football League, this time as champions of the National League after beating Boreham Wood 3-1 at the Raceground on Saturday evening.

Speaking alongside fellow Hollywood A-lister and Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds after the victory, McElhenney said: "Paul Mullin is one of the greatest football players in the world!"

The 28-year-old forward, who signed for Wrexham in the summer of 2021, has forged a reputation as one of the deadliest finishers outside of the Football League in recent seasons having fired 46 goals in 50 appearances for the National League outfit this term.

Such eye-catching displays have seen the former Cambridge United, Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town forward become a hero-like figure at the Raceground, with owners McElhenney and Reynolds regularly expressing their affection for their 46-goal hot-shot.

There were jubliant scenes at the final whistle in Wrexham with a pitch invasion, McElhenney in tears, Reynolds hugging everyone in sight - and Litherland-born Mullin raised onto the shoulders of a very happy fan.

Victory over Boreham Wood also ensured Phil Parkinson's side set a new record for the number of points in a 46-game National League season, with their current total of 110 able to be increased further if they can secure victory at Torquay United next weekend.
