Scouse band's 'vicious and beautiful' gig as frontman steals show

Scouse musicians have never been afraid to stand out from the crowd - and emerging indie-rock band Stone also look primed to ruffle a few feathers.

Fin Power, the lead singer, had the rowdy crowd at his fingertips at their 02 Academy gig last night in Hotham Street. His manic and powerful energy seeped into the packed venue as soon as he stepped on stage, leading the band’s charge through numerous raw indie anthems such as I Let Go and Keep Running.

The first time he stopped for breath, Fin admitted to the crowd he had “gone fancy” and had swapped drinking beer on stage for white wine to combat burping. Drawing laughs and applause from the crowd, the Wavertree-born musician set out to prove his energy for ferocious music had not been impacted by the change.

Stone’s quartet of musicians all pulled their weight in delivering a night that Liverpool’s indie fans will remember for years to come. Drummer Alex Smith, bassist Sarah Surrage and lead guitarist Elliot Gill switched effortlessly from the politically-charged Money to the melancholic Save Yourself.

In between songs Fin made his strong political views known winning acclaim from the crowd. He said during one interval: “I personally believe the rich should give a little more cash, there are people on the streets.”

Fin also spoke movingly of losing his grandfather, and praised his fellow band members for delivering amazing music, only pausing his mesmerising routine to take sips of chardonnay. He said the band had waited “their whole f****** lives for this”, and they certainly didn’t disappoint on their big night.

Stone proved last night that they are a group of truly unique artists. Their set ranged from songs reminiscent of a 2000s-era indie hit to unique, instrumental-heavy anthems.

When Fin spoke to the ECHO last month, he claimed that Stone’s live shows were “vicious and beautiful”. Judging by their performance at the 02 Academy, I think he was spot on.
