Scottish university students block road in Gaza protest

STUDENTS at a Scottish university have blocked a road as part of an ongoing protest over the institution's ties with Israel.

Around 100 Glasgow University students blocked University Avenue on Thursday, as they called on the university to divest from Israeli arms companies.

The protest is part of an ongoing student campaign co-ordinated by the Glasgow University Justice for Palestine Society (GUJPS), a student activist group.

(Image: James Chapelard)(Image: James Chapelard) The society claims the university’s £6.8 million of investments in arms companies such as BAE Systems make it complicit in war crimes, including the genocide in Palestine where Glasgow University alumnus Dima Alhaj and her six-month-old baby were killed.

On Wednesday, a group of students occupied a university building, with some students announcing they were taking part in a hunger strike.

GUJPS confirmed on Thursday that seven students were currently participating in the hunger strike.

Police could be seen attending as students sat on the road, while public transport operator First Bus confirmed one of its routes had been diverted.

In a statement on their Instagram, GUJPS said: "Road block outside Glasgow Uni by protestors demanding the University divest from the £6.8m they have invested in arms companies sending weapons that are facilitating Israel’s gen0cide in Palestine. "7 university students are now taking part in a hunger strike to demand this. Yesterday students occupied the Charles Wilson Building and renamed it Dar Ahmad Manasra, with the university calling the police and them and the police in turn locking them in and refusing to let food and water get to them, rather consuming it themselves.

"Last year in a consultation over 80% of staff and students voted in favour of divestment. The university ignored this. "Shame on them. Eternal solidarity with these students and with Palestine"

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
