Scottish Tory councillor arrested over alleged romance fraud

A Scottish Tory councillor has been arrested over an alleged romance fraud.

Police Scotland say Andrew Polson has been released pending further inquiries.

Mr Polson, 49, was the co-leader of East Dunbartonshire Council until May and stood as a candidate in last year's Scottish elections.

His arrest was mentioned in a separate civil action brought by a 68-year-old woman against the Tory councillor.

In the court papers, the woman claims that Mr Polson persuaded her to let him control her finances and that he abused the trust she had placed in him, the BBC reports.

The women also alleges that Mr Polson used her money to buy property for himself.

She claims that they had a five-year relationship that ended when Mr Polson decided to remarry in 2018 - and alleges he got back in touch upon learning that she had received a large divorce settlement.

Mr Polson is a councillor for Bearsden South and also serves as a director of the Christian community radio station, Revival FM.

The Daily Record has approached Mr Polson for comment.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with fraud and released pending further inquiries."
