Scottish SPCA appeals for information after sick dog abandoned in Lanarkshire

A seriously ill Staffordshire Bull Terrier pup was found abandoned in woodland in Hamilton over the weekend.

The female brindle and white dog was discovered in the Udston and Glenlee community woods, before being handed into the Hamilton branch of Vets4Pets by a member of the public on January 23.

The dog was said to be 'in a terrible condition', abnormally thin and covered in faeces.

It was so unwell that it later had to be put to sleep by vets.

SSPCA inspector Dawn Murrie told Lanarkshire Live : "The dog was in a very poor state, emaciated and covered in faeces and urine.

"The vets made every effort to stabilise her but unfortunately, her condition was so poor that she had to be put to sleep on welfare grounds.

"The vets estimated that she was approximately between eight and 12-months old. She was not microchipped.

"While we appreciate the owner of this dog may have intended for her to be found, this is not the correct procedure to follow if you can no longer take care of an animal or afford veterinary treatment.

"If anyone has any information on the owner of this dog, or the dog itself they can contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999."
