Scottish retail giant M&Co to close all 170 stores leading to 2,000 job losses

A mainstay on many Scottish high streets has announced that they are set to close all 170 of their stores meaning that almost 2,000 jobs could be lost.

M&Co, a Renfrewshire-based company, was formally known as Mackays and is one of the nation’s most well known clothing brands.

Unfortunately the company was forced to appoint administrators at the tail end of 2022 - this comes two years after the business had previously collapsed.

AK Retail Holdings had purchased the brand but sadly the deal did not include the physical stores which means that they will close down at Easter, the BBC reports.

Shoppers were notified of the news after it was shared on social media by branches across the UK.

The posts, on Facebook, began: "Unfortunately we haven't received the news we would have hoped for during our administration period, and would like to share this news with you.

"As we haven't received any funded, deliverable offers that would result in the transfer of the company's stores or staff to a potential buyer, this means that all of our stores will close."

Mackays was first set up as a pawnbroker back in 1834 in Paisley Renfrewshire.

It then began to sell clothing in 1953 and was led by siblings Len and Ian McGeoch, before it re-branded as M&Co in 2005.

The company however fell on hard times and entered administration in 2020 - losing 47 stores and 380 staff - but assets were bought back by the family that started the enterprise.

AK Retail Holdings, which has bought the brand, is the owner of plus size retailer Yours Clothing.
