Scottish restaurant named among best in the world for 'casual dining'

A SCOTTISH restaurant has been named one of the best “casual dining” spots in the world.

The Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards has rated Makars Gourmet Mash Bar in Edinburgh in ninth place in the top 10.

Organika in Cusco, Peru was named as the world’s best restaurant when it comes to casual dining.

On the Edinburgh spot, Tripadvisor said: “If you crave comfort food, make your way to Makars Gourmet Mash Bar.

“It checks all the boxes – generous portions, reasonable prices and great vibes. Dig into their signature mashes, and save room for delightful desserts.

“Attentive service from their friendly staff will make your meal even more satisfying.”

The restaurant can be found on Bank Street in the Scottish capital, just off the Royal Mile.

Elsewhere, Murphy’s Pakora Bar in Glasgow was named as one of the best casual dining spots in the UK.

Known for its Indian cuisine, it has been frequented by a number of famous faces, including Scottish actor James McAvoy.

It was praised by Tripadvisor for its “reasonable prices, relaxed atmosphere and varied options (beyond pakoras),” which help to make it a “go-to spot for families”.

Howies Waterloo Place was also named among the UK’s best casual dining spots and was praised for its “large menu of fresh, seasonal fare”.

People were encouraged to try the two-course deal offering and the craft cocktails.

“The friendly and knowledgeable staff add to the warm and memorable dining experience,” the review said.
