Scottish rave scene explored in new BBC documentary featuring GBX

Best-selling author Graeme Armstrong is set to feature in a new BBC documentary following Scotland's rave scene.

The documentary 'Scotland the Rave' will follow the 30-year-old, who is best known for his debut novel The Young Team, on an intensely personal and honest journey through his passion for rave and the lifestyle that comes with it.

Along the way, Graeme speaks to legends from the rave scene including Scotland’s superstar DJs Mallorca Lee, Scott Brown and Clyde 1's George Bowie.

George Bowie whose radio show GBX has been on air for an astonishing twenty-nine years, will show the documentary his private studio and how the tunes are made.

Bowie will discuss the Scottish rave scene about everything from the continuing success of his radio show to the snobbish attitudes that exist towards the music genre.

'Scotland the Rave' also enthuses with fellow party-people from this generation who reminisce about everything from the crazy clothing to the euphoric atmosphere.

Graeme, from Airdrie, will also explore the other side to the rave scene - the use of drugs.

Armstrong, who was a keen raver back in his teens, considers himself lucky to alive and after a chronic decline in his mental health.

He cleaned up his act giving up all substances in 2012. With his own story, front and centre in the film, he is the perfect guide to the vibrant but at times, dark rave scene in Scotland, which he is currently penning his second novel about.

Speaking to The Record, Graeme said he was looking forward to the documentary airing next week.

He said: "Doing this project and meeting my rave heroes was a dream come true! It runs on pure nostalgic energy. I hope everybody enjoys our mad trip down memory lane from the PCDJ humble beginnings into the absolute madness of Fantazia and the big hall raves!’

* Scotland The Rave will air on Tuesday, August 24, at 10pm on BBC Scotland.
