Scottish pub closes with 'immediate effect' after just one year of trading

A SCOTTISH town pub has closed with "immediate effect" after a year of trading.

The Fisherrow Tap, located on New Street in Musselburgh, opened its doors to customers on October 25, 2023, but bosses took to social media this week to announce the "sad" closure of the pub.

The venue was brought to Musselburgh by the same people who launched Edinburgh's Portobello Tap and the Old Eastway Tap on the capital's Easter Road. Those bars are remaining open.

Previously, Hole in the Wa' occupied the premises.

The Fisherrow Tap released a statement saying: "We’re really sad to say that after much consideration, we’ve taken the very tough decision to close Fisherrow Tap with immediate effect.

"We poured our heart and soul, and three months of our lives, into renovating a pretty unloved boozer back in June 2023 and had high hopes for the pub.

"We’ve really appreciated how welcoming the community has been to our business and our team, but the sad reality is that the numbers just aren’t stacking up.

"So, our immediate priorities are ensuring the wellbeing of our team members and that our valued suppliers are all made whole and paid what they are owed. By taking this step now, we’re confident we’ll be able to do that.

"Our thanks to all our customers who have frequented the pub over the last year or so and made it a really special wee place.

"And of course, thanks to our brilliant team for putting their best efforts into trying to make it a success.

"For the avoidance of any doubt, this decision has no impact on the brewery, Portobello Tap, and Old Eastway Tap, which remain open and trading as normal."

The news has been met with sadness by residents.

One person said on social media: "Sad news, have really enjoyed my visits and the staff have always been great. Really sorry to hear this. Best wishes to all the staff that worked there."

While another said: "Ah, really sad news, top two of pubs in Musselburgh by far. The type of neighbourhood pub that’s needed here, so disappointing to hear this. Good luck to all!"
