Scottish Premiership footballer sparks fan anger with Tommy Robinson post

A SCOTTISH Premiership football team is looking into a social media post from one of its players after they shared a video from far-right agitator Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – known as “Tommy Robinson”.

Cammy MacPherson, who plays for the Perth-based St Johnstone FC, had retweeted a film made by the English Defence League founder which was posted to Twitter/X.

The film sees Robinson repeat false claims about a young Syrian refugee, Jamal Hijazi, who successfully sued him for libel in 2021. A court order barred Robinson from repeating the allegations and ordered him to pay £100,000.

After MacPherson shared Robinson’s film on social media on July 27, fans of St Johnstone FC reacted with anger, the BBC reported.

One wrote: "When you’ve got lots of good people as Saints do trying to build an inclusive club, having your starting midfielder retweeting [expletive] Robinson is absolutely minging."

The BBC reported that St Johnstone FC had been made aware of the incident and were investigating internally.

MacPherson’s posts on Twitter/X are now protected.

Tommy Robinson is believed to have fled the country

Robinson is currently the subject of an arrest warrant and has allegedly fled from the UK. He was due to appear at the Royal Courts of Justice on July 29 for a hearing in his latest contempt of court case but was not in attendance.

Mr Justice Johnson issued a warrant for Robinson’s arrest after he did not attend the hearing, but ordered that it not be carried out “until early October” to allow Robinson time to indicate that he would attend the next hearing voluntarily or to apply to “set aside” the warrant.

Robinson is believed to be hiding out at a five-star resort in Ayia Napa, Cyprus.

Amid a wave of far-right riots across England and Northern Ireland, police, the Home Office, and the Government are set to join UK retailers in urgent talks over how to protect their staff and customers as they brace for more rioting expected to break out across the country.

Stand Up To Racism have issued a list of places they believe will be targeted by the far-right, and called on counterprotesters to turn out.
