Scottish Parliament praises volunteers at Grangemouth's new addiction service

Volunteers who set up an addiction service in Grangemouth have been praised by the Scottish Parliament.

Falkirk East SNP MSP Michelle Thomson lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament, which was backed by the likes of Kaukab Stewart, Glasgow and Kelvin SNP MSP and Scottish Green MSP for Central Scotland, Gillian McKay.

Kersiebank Community Project created the service to help people and families in the town struggling with addiction.

It currently operates out of the charity's existing building in Grangemouth town centre, and runs every Thursday, between 9:30am and 1pm.

Change Grow Live, which specialises in substance misuse and criminal justice intervention projects, are on hand to offer one-to-one support sessions and information about injecting and harm reduction.

Falkirk East MSP Michelle Thomson said: "We know that addiction is a serious and complex issue and that it can have a devastating impact on individuals and their families.

"Given this, I am pleased to see the establishment of Kersiebank Community Project’s drop-in clinic.

"One of the barriers preventing support getting to those most in need is stigma.

"Initiatives like this in Grangemouth town centre are vital in breaking those barriers down and helping end the stigma associated with addiction.

"I would encourage anyone who is currently facing challenges to reach out to Kersiebank when they can. I fully support the initiative of the drop-in clinic."

The Scottish Government said: "The drop-in service in Grangemouth to help people and families struggling with all types of addiction is exactly the sort of support that our national mission to tackle drug deaths was set up to help deliver.

"This is a good example of a community group, third sector partners and local services coming together to provide support where it matters most.

"Our national mission in tackling the drug deaths emergency includes an additional £250 million by the end of this parliament to improve and increase access to services for people affected by drug addiction, with significant new funding to communities groups and targeted funding through Alcohol and Drug Partnerships for third sector partners such as Change Grow Live, who will provide the new service in Grangemouth."
