Scottish oat milk to be distributed UK-wide for first time after funding boost

OAT milk produced in Scotland is to be distributed UK-wide for the first time.

Brose is the only oat milk brand which sources and produces its product entirely within Scotland.

Earlier this year, The National spoke to company co-founder Josh Barton about the historical pedigree of Scottish oats and the challenges to growth in the sector.

Now, Brose has won £100,000 of funding through Scotland’s biggest business funding competition Scottish Edge.

The funding will allow the company to grow further, with bosses reporting that they have customers already prepared to commit to orders to the value of £500,000 per year.

Plans are in the works for the creation of “extended shelf-life” products, which will allow the company to extend into the UK-wide market and compete with brands such as Minor Figures.

Production of existing Brose products is also set to be scaled up and the company will seek SALSA accreditation – a scheme which assists local food and drink producers to supply their products to national and regional buyers.

The company is aiming for a turnover of sales of £1 million by 2025 and a whopping £10 million by 2030.

Barton told The National: “We are delighted to have this opportunity provided by Scottish EDGE.

“This funding will enable us to scale-up our production capacity to reach that next level.

“With our new distribution partners, Lomond Foods and Food Options, we will be supplying businesses and retail outlets across the UK.

“Not only will we be able to share a premium, Scottish and gluten free oat milk that people have been waiting for, we’ll also be creating jobs and opportunities for local people all while celebrating Scotland’s agricultural heritage.”

Brose was founded in 2017 and is based out of East Lothian.

It already supplies one of the UK’s biggest catering companies, as well as The Balmoral hotel and dozens of cafes and coffee shops.
