Scottish Labour reported to Electoral Commission for 'intentional misinformation'

SCOTTISH Labour have been reported to the Electoral Commission for "intentionally distributing misinformation".

An SNP MSP has written to the body over a leaflet distributed by the party in the run up to two by-elections in Glasgow later this month.

Voters in Glasgow’s Southside Central and North East wards are set to go to the polls to elect their next councillors on March 20.

But Bob Doris – who represents Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn – has hit out at a claim made in the party’s campaigning material and reported them to the Electoral Commission.

The leaflet (below) writes that GB Energy is “lowering bills and creating jobs”.

During the General Election campaign, Labour pledged they would cut household energy bills by £300 through the new publicly owned company.

But the promise has been called into question after the boss of Labour's GB Energy, Juergen Maier, called the initiative a "long-term project".

Meanwhile, customers have instead seen bills rise by £170 since last July, and are set to increase even further from April 1.

The letter, which was sent on Friday, accuses Scottish Labour of “intentionally distributing misinformation” to voters in Glasgow throughout February and March this year via the “newspaper-style four-page leaflet”.

“Under any measure it is untrue to claim that GB Energy has lowered bills,” the letter reads.

“Gas and electricity bills in the UK will increase again on 1 April, when the latest energy price cap takes effect. The annual bill for a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will go up to £1849 per year, an increase of £111.

“This is on top of previous energy price cap rises of 1.2% in January 2025 and 10% in October 2024.”

Doris adds: “You will agree that the distribution of misinformation to voters in Glasgow is unacceptable, especially in the context of two Glasgow City Council by-elections on March 20, 2025.”

The MSP then urges the Electoral Commission to investigate the issue further.

Doris writes: “I would be grateful for an understanding of what action will be taken to ensure Scottish Labour resolve the situation that has led to voters in Glasgow being intentionally misinformed.”

An Electoral Commission spokesperson said: "We have received a letter from Bob Doris MSP relating to concerns about campaign material.

"We will consider the issues raised, however the Commission's remit does not extend to regulating the content of campaign material. Our role is to support party and campaigner compliance with the imprint laws, which are designed to show voters who paid to produce the material."
