Scottish Labour overtakes Conservatives in new poll as PartyGate dents Tory popularity

Scottish Labour has overtaken the Conservatives in a new poll as the Downing Street PartyGate scandal continues to cause problems for Tories.

A survey by Survation shows the SNP are still well out in front when it comes to voting intentions at both Holyrood and Westminster elections.

But the poll found the number of people who said they would vote Labour at the next General Election has risen to 27 per cent, an increase of seven points.

In contrast the Tories have dropped by three points to 19 per cent.

It's a major boost for Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar as he tries to revive his party's fortunes in Scotland.

The Tories cemented their place as the second largest party north of the Border following the 2015 General Election which saw Labour almost wiped out by an SNP landslide.

But the on-going PartyGate scandal - which saw Downing Street staff attend several social occasions at the height of the first covid lockdown - looks to be causing serious problems for Scottish Conservatives leader Douglas Ross.

He originally called for Boris Johnson to resign as Prime Minister as allegations of rule-breaking at No 10 piled up - only to perform a u-turn on the subject last month.

A total of 47 per cent of Scots said they would vote for the SNP at a future Westminster election, with Labour on 27 per cent, the Tories on 19 per cent, and the Lib Dems on six per cent.

When it comes to constituency voting intentions for a future Holyrood poll, the SNP is on 46 per cent, a drop of two points, while Labour is on 25 per cent, an increase of two.

The Conservatives are on 20 per cent, a drop of two points, while the Lib Dems are unchanged on seven per cent.

The survey was commissioned by the respected Ballot Box Scotland website.

Allan Faulds, who runs the site, commented: "The Conservatives may have thought the worst of the lockdown parties storm had passed, but if this is what it looks like after the storm, Douglas Ross may dread to imagine what it’d have looked like during.

"This gives Anas Sarwar and his party further cause to celebrate this poll.

"But a word of caution - 27 per cent was what Labour won in Scotland in 2017, and it then netted them seven MPs. However, most of those were very narrow wins over an SNP that was on 37 per cent.

"As the SNP are unmoved from their 2019 share of 45 per cent, Labour gains if this result came about might be much more limited.

"Indeed, they could still place behind the Conservatives and Lib Dems in terms of seats.

"While a couple of Conservative and one of the Lib Dems’ seats are clearly vulnerable, they are well dug into three each, even allowing for likely boundary changes."
