Scottish Labour MP says Section 35 ruling on gender reforms should be 'respected'

SCOTTISH Labour MP Ian Murray has said the Court of Session ruling in favour of the UK Government's use of a Section 35 order should be "respected".

We told how Lady Haldane ruled that Scottish Secretary Alister Jack's use of the little-known part of the Scotland Act to block Scotland's gender reforms was lawful

LGBT+ groups have already urged the Scottish Government to appeal the judgement, while First Minister Humza Yousaf has said he will take time to consider it.

Elsewhere, opponents of the legislation have called on Scottish ministers to drop any further legal challenges.

The Gender Recognition Reform Bill was passed by two-thirds of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament in December 2022, including a number from Scottish Labour.

However, shadow Scottish secretary Murray (below) has shown support for the court's decision and hit out at both the SNP and Tories.

In a statement, the Edinburgh South MP said: “It is disappointing this legalisation ended in the courts but this ruling should be respected.

“It is shameful that after years of debate, trans people feel no more protected and women no more reassured.

“This is another demonstration of why both governments have to work together rather than spending taxpayers’ money fighting in courts and pitting communities against each other.”
