Scottish Labour MP fumes at 'juvenile' Stephen Flynn for daring to criticise Starmer

A SCOTTISH Labour MP has branded Stephen Flynn “juvenile and childish” after comments he made about the Prime Minister extending the offer of a state visit to Donald Trump.

Backbencher Gregor Poynton hit out at the SNP’s Westminster leader following a statement from Keir Starmer to the Commons on his diplomacy efforts around the war in Ukraine.

The Livingston MP praised Starmer’s “leadership” over the weekend and said contributions from all parties had shown the “country rising to meet the moment”.

Poynton added: “That's why it was so disappointing but perhaps not surprising the Westminster leader of the SNP chose this weekend to make such juvenile and childish statements.

“Does he agree with me that the SNP's leaders’ juvenile posts on social media or his party's fundamentally unserious approach to nuclear defence and deterrent shows that SNP cannot be trusted on the serious matter of the nation's defence?”

Starmer (above) replied: “Look, I mean, different people will respond in different ways. Some will take to the keyboard as warriors. I picked up the phone to world leaders to try and resolve the situation.”

Flynn had previously said that Starmer should "get back up off his knees and revoke that offer of a state visit".

Flynn had attempted to strike a collegiate tone during his contribution earlier in the session, applauding Starmer’s efforts to assemble a “coalition of the willing” who the Prime Minister would do the “heavy lifting” on backing Ukraine’s fightback against Russia.

Starmer responded with a jibe about the SNP’s anti-nuclear weapons policy.

The Prime Minister told the Commons that the UK Government was seeking to ensure Ukraine had a place for peace talks, which so far have exclusively involved America and Russia.

Starmer and other European leaders are committed to putting “boots on the ground and planes in the sky” to police a peace deal, MPs heard.
