SCOTTISH Labour have won two by-elections in North Lanarkshire.
Margaret Quigley was elected in Fortissat whilst Helena Gray was elected in Mossend and Holytown, North Lanarkshire Council confirmed after the by-elections took place on Thursday.
The seats were previously held by Scottish Labour councillors Kenneth Stevenson and Frank McNally, who were both elected as MPs in the General Election on July 4.
In Fortissat, Quigley received 807 first preference votes, while Progressive Change candidate Mary McIntosh received 529 votes.

SNP candidate Brendan McAleese came third, receiving 447 votes.
Meanwhile, in Mossend and Holytown Gray received 616 first preference votes, beating the SNP’s Shahnawaz Khan who received 586 votes.

Turnout was low at both by-elections – 17.9% in Fortissat and 15.8% in Mossend and Holytown.
Commenting, returning officer Des Murray said: “I would like to congratulate Clare Margaret Quigley and Helena Gray on their election, and I look forward to seeing them at the next council meeting.”
